Understanding briefs

A brief is defined in media terms as a resource that outlines the objectives, target audience, budget, and the other criteria that are important to the client in the production of a media product.

Briefs: briefs for a media products come in many different forms.

Contractual brief is a type of brief whereby the production company goes in to a contract with the client to produce the product. if the production company fails to meet the requirements of the brief they may face legal issues as a result.

Negotiated this type of brief will be brought up if the cooperative


Breif will be given by 2 or more media companies. It allows any issues between them to be discussed about the breif ro anything they would like to up with client. Through the negotiations the breif can then be changed in order to suite every part in the content of the film.

Informal this is often verbal only. It is where the client and the media agency they have employed discuss the requirements and agree together on the project.

Tender this is where a cleint will advertise the breif and a media company will bring together a proposal that they will pitch to the client. There could be multiple pitches to client from many different companies, so the client will then get the chance to choose the propopsal that they think best suits their breif and offer the job to that production company.

Formal This is when a production comapny, is given  a breif by the client which outlines the product which they want to be made. this type of breif only gives enough information to be able to produce the product, any issues or information that the media company would like to go over can be discussed during the negotiations with the client.
